Recording artist, songwriter, and producer Chan Dizzy has vowed to contribute to the conscious growth of Jamaica’s music industry through new content he plans to release soon. Although his previous work is not the most unsavoury in the dancehall space, the “Hello Badmind” hitmaker’s recent spiritual transformation has inspired him to make the commitment.
At the age of 37, the Jamaican entertainer, whose real name is Kamar Ho-Shing, recently converted to Islam and now identifies as a Muslim. He explained that he had been contemplating this decision for years and that his admiration for Malcolm X, a Muslim and one of his heroes, influenced him greatly. He declared that he had read extensively and had conversations with other Islamic community members, including friends, before making the transition.
Although music is prohibited in Islam, Chan Dizzy has not retired from the industry that put him into the spotlight. He clarified that the rulings on the content of music vary and govern what is allowed or prohibited.
He believes that the positive aspects of Islam outweigh the negative and that it has taught him discipline, which has made him more focused on songwriting. He still writes songs for other artists as a side hustle and is working assiduously to finish his recording studio which is about 90 percent complete.
Chan Dizzy is looking forward to new beginnings this year as he refocuses on his music. He promises fans a new single titled “Insomnia,” the first song he recorded since converting to Islam, due for release later this month.
