Jamaican songstress Shenseea and her record label, Interscope Records, have been given until the 20th of January to respond to a lawsuit regarding footage in her music video for “Foreplay.”
The lawsuit was filed on October 21 in US District Court for the Central District of California by American multimedia artist Stephanie Sarley, who claims that the “Foreplay” video used nearly 40 seconds of footage from her “unique line of sensual fruit imagery” without consent.
Shenseea and Interscope, the latter a subsidiary of UMG Recordings, Inc, were served with the complaint on November 30 and have agreed to respond by January 20, 2023.
Sarley is seeking damages or statutory damages of up to U$150,000 for each of her three “Original Works,” as well as attorney fees, interest, and costs.
The “Foreplay” video was released in October 2019 and was later removed from YouTube after Sarley accused Shenseea of infringement on Instagram and threatened legal action. Shenseea released an edited version of the video in early December 2019.
