Livingston Cain, a juror in the Vybz Kartel murder trial, was found guilty on Tuesday, but his attorney, Valrie Neita-Robertson, KC, says she plans to appeal the decision. Cain was accused of offering $500,000 to the jury foreman in exchange for a not-guilty finding from the other jurors.
The Kingston and St. Andrew Parish Court found him guilty of perverting the course of justice after he was accused of offering money to a female juror in the case against dancehall star Vybz Kartel. Kartel, whose real name is Adidja Palmer, was found guilty of the 2011 murder of Clive “Lizard” Williams at a home in Havendale, St. Andrew, together with Shawn Campbell, Kahiro Jones, and Andre St. John.
Cain will spend Christmas behind bars after having his bail revoked by trial Judge Maxine Ellis on Tuesday. Cain had been released on bail for eight years.
On March 2, 2023, he is scheduled to have his sentence handed down.
Previously on November 22, Parish Judge Maxine Ellis stated that a verdict needed to be reached at soonest because she did not want the trial to continue beyond this year.
“I would prefer finishing this matter in this calendar year so I don’t have to mark another anniversary. I have now set the matter for summation. All things being equal, this matter is going to be completed on December 13,” Judge Ellis declared
Neita Robertson made several points in court, including asking why the case hadn’t been dismissed earlier, and highlighted several flaws in the prosecution’s argument.
She expressed that her client was put in this predicament after indicating that he would return a not-guilty verdict and advised that other jurors do the same. She concludes that a case was fabricated against him because of this.
