Dancehall Music Is Booming Among Young Kenyans: Spotify Data Shows Massive 95% Growth

The evidence supporting Nairobi’s growing importance to dancehall continues to pile up. Fresh Spotify listening data shows that dancehall was the fastest-growing music genre among Kenyan listeners aged 18–24, recording a remarkable 95% year-on-year increase. The surge offers a major explanation for why Nairobi has repeatedly emerged as the biggest YouTube streaming city for Jamaican dancehall stars Vybz Kartel, Skillibeng, Spice and Shenseea, according to the YouTube Charts data previously analysed.

The figures are particularly significant because Spotify’s June 2026 data showed just how central young listeners are to Nairobi’s streaming culture. People aged 18–24 accounted for 53.7% of all Spotify streams in Nairobi, a larger share than Lagos at 44.4% and Johannesburg at 29.9%. Separately, Spotify’s Kenya-wide data for listeners in that same age group found dancehall growing by 95% year on year, ahead of Bongo Flava (+75%), Gengetone (+48%), Gospel (+37%), Amapiano (+34%), R&B (+28%), Afrobeats (+25%) and Afropop (+21%).

The distinction between the two data sets is important. The 53.7% figure applies specifically to Nairobi’s Spotify streams in June 2026, while the 95% dancehall growth figure refers to Kenyan Spotify listeners aged 18–24 more broadly, rather than Nairobi alone. Even so, the trends tell a powerful story. Kenya’s young audience is rapidly embracing dancehall, while Nairobi is simultaneously emerging as the digital home of some of the genre’s biggest Jamaican stars.

For dancehall, the implications are difficult to ignore. Kingston created the genre, but Kenya’s younger generation is increasingly helping to drive its digital growth. When the Spotify surge is considered alongside Nairobi’s No. 1 YouTube rankings for Vybz Kartel, Skillibeng, Spice and Shenseea, the numbers point to something bigger than a single viral moment or one artiste’s popularity. Dancehall is gaining serious momentum among young Kenyans, and Nairobi appears to be at the centre of the movement.
