Vybz Kartel has chimed in on the ongoing debate over who could one day inherit the title of King of the Dancehall, naming Masicka and Alkaline among the artistes he sees as potential successors. During his interview with Anthony Miller on Entertainment Report (ER), the Dancehall icon was asked directly whether Masicka could take the crown when it eventually passes. His answer was immediate: “Of course.”
Kartel then offered a strong endorsement of the Genasyde deejay, praising his lyrical ability and describing him as brave. “As a young artiste, lyrically, you don’t have a problem with lyrics. Clearly, he’s brave, and he can actually DJ,” Kartel said, before adding that Masicka was “one of the good candidates”. He was careful, however, to stress that Dancehall is constantly evolving and that the qualities of the next generation of stars may not always mirror those of the artistes who came before them.
When asked who else could potentially wear the crown, Kartel also brought Alkaline into the conversation, saying, “I would put, like, him, Alkaline, I think.” He stopped short of ranking either artiste above the other, while also suggesting that other names deserved consideration. Kartel went on to mention Malie Donn, praising the young artiste’s persona and image, saying he liked “his whole persona and image and everything.”
The comments are likely to ignite fresh debate across Dancehall, particularly among the loyal fan bases of Masicka and Alkaline. Kartel did not declare a single heir to his throne, but his words placed both artistes firmly in the succession conversation. For now, the King has identified some candidates, and Dancehall fans will no doubt have plenty to say about who should ultimately wear the crown.
