Patra is rewriting the story of one of the most difficult chapters of her groundbreaking career, revealing that she was never dropped by Sony Records and that her retreat from the international spotlight followed a deeply personal battle with depression. Speaking on The FIX podcast, the Jamaican dancehall pioneer recalled becoming overwhelmed while travelling by limousine to a press conference in Chicago during the promotion of her 1995 album Scent of Attraction. She identified that moment as the beginning of her depression and said reggae icon Bunny Wailer subsequently became a crucial source of guidance, ultimately becoming “one of the main reasons” she is still alive today.

Patra said she had been touring while promoting Scent of Attraction when the pressure became overwhelming. Rather than continuing to the scheduled press conference, she returned to the limousine and eventually made her way back to her home in Florida. The decision, she suggested, was pivotal. Had she continued pushing herself without addressing what she was experiencing, she believes the situation could have consumed her. Her account offers a different explanation for the period in which she stepped away from the intensity of the international music business, challenging the notion that her career slowdown was simply the result of being dropped by her record label.

At the time, Patra was one of the most commercially successful Jamaican women operating at the intersection of dancehall, reggae, R&B and American pop culture. Her 1993 debut album, Queen of the Pack, topped the Billboard Reggae Albums chart, while singles including “Worker Man” and “Romantic Call” established her as a formidable crossover act. “Worker Man” reached No. 53 on the Billboard Hot 100 and No. 1 on the US Dance chart. Her 1995 follow-up, Scent of Attraction, reached No. 151 on the Billboard 200 and No. 2 on the Reggae Albums chart, with her version of Grace Jones’ “Pull Up to the Bumper” reaching No. 60 on the Hot 100.

Behind those achievements, however, Patra said she was dealing with loneliness and a growing feeling that she could not speak openly about what she was going through. She was initially afraid to turn to her mother or brother, but eventually sought help with the support of a close friend in Florida and others around her. She also credited Bunny Wailer with taking her under his wing and teaching her how to navigate both the highs and lows of the entertainment industry, including when to say yes and when to say no. Patra said that mentorship was instrumental in helping her through the darkest period of her life.

The experience, she explained, ultimately changed her. Patra said she has become more spiritual, humble, caring and educated, while rejecting the idea that her determination was simply stubbornness. Instead, she described it as “fighting for her spirit” and said she is now “very happy and relaxed”, a stark contrast to the troubled dreams and emotional turmoil she experienced in earlier years. For an artiste whose career helped open doors for female Jamaican dancehall performers in the US mainstream, Patra’s latest revelations add a deeply human chapter to a legacy built on international success, resilience and reinvention.
