Cricket icon Chris Gayle has expanded his business portfolio with the launch of Rich Rum, a Jamaican-owned premium rum brand seeking to leverage his global star power and Jamaica’s world-renowned reputation for rum to compete on the international market. The former West Indies captain unveiled the brand at the AC Hotel in St Andrew, marking a major move beyond cricket as he turns his international influence towards building a premium Jamaican product with export ambitions.
Produced by Triple Gold Rums Limited, Rich Rum enters the market with three offerings: Overproof, Premium and Dark. The range is made with Jamaican ingredients and copper pot distillation, while its premium packaging and brand strategy are geared towards regional and international growth. Incoming Triple Gold Rums Limited CEO Ian McDonald outlined plans to establish Rich Rum as a competitive Jamaican brand overseas, while Culture, Gender, Entertainment and Sport Minister Olivia Grange was also among those who addressed the launch.
State Minister in the Ministry of Industry, Investment and Commerce Delano Seiveright hailed Gayle’s investment as a major win for Brand Jamaica, arguing that the cricket legend brings something far more powerful than a traditional celebrity endorsement. “When someone with Chris Gayle’s global recognition decides not simply to endorse a product, but to build a Jamaican-owned company around a premium Jamaican product, that is a significant boost for Brand Jamaica,” Seiveright said. “It creates visibility that money simply cannot buy.”
That visibility could prove crucial to Rich Rum’s international ambitions. Gayle commands a massive social media following across Facebook, Instagram and TikTok and remains hugely popular in major cricket markets including India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Australia, New Zealand, England and South Africa. His sporting legacy includes two Test triple centuries and becoming the first batsman to score a double century in an ICC Cricket World Cup, giving the Jamaican superstar a global profile that extends well beyond the Caribbean.
For Gayle, Rich Rum represents another chapter in a career built on international recognition and unmistakable Jamaican identity. Now, the “Universe Boss” is looking to translate the star power that made him one of cricket’s most recognisable personalities into a globally competitive Jamaican rum brand, potentially taking his influence from the cricket pitch to shelves and glasses around the world.
