Reggae pioneer Stranger Cole, the legendary Jamaican singer behind the classic hit Bangarang, has died, prompting an outpouring of tributes from across the Caribbean and the global music community. The veteran entertainer, whose career spanned more than six decades, was remembered by Minister of Culture, Gender, Entertainment and Sport Olivia “Babsy” Grange as an icon who helped shape the evolution of Ska, Rocksteady and Reggae.
In a heartfelt statement announcing his passing, Minister Grange described Wilburn Theodore “Stranger” Cole as one of Jamaica’s great musical trailblazers. “For more than six decades Stranger helped shape the sound and evolution of Jamaican music from Ska through Rocksteady to Reggae,” she said, while extending condolences to his family, friends, fans and the wider music fraternity. She also highlighted Bangarang as one of the earliest recordings widely regarded as helping define the Reggae genre.
Stranger Cole’s catalogue became part of the soundtrack of Jamaican music history, with timeless records including Rough and Tough, When You Call My Name, Just Like a River and Run Joe. His distinctive voice and songwriting style helped bridge multiple eras of Caribbean music, earning him respect from generations of artistes and music lovers both locally and internationally.
