Prime Minister Dr. Andrew Holness says Jamaica’s film industry could soon become one of the country’s most powerful economic drivers, as the Government ramps up efforts to position the island as a global production destination capable of attracting international investment, boosting tourism and creating jobs for creatives. Speaking at the premiere of the locally produced film Love Offside, Holness described film as “the next frontier” of Jamaica’s economic growth strategy, signalling a major shift in how the country views its entertainment and creative sectors.
Addressing guests at the premiere, the Prime Minister highlighted the increasing global demand for authentic storytelling and cultural content, arguing that Jamaica already possesses the talent, scenery and cultural influence needed to compete internationally. He stressed that film has the potential to expand Jamaica’s brand beyond reggae and dancehall music, opening new opportunities for actors, writers, directors, producers and technical crews across the island.
The move forms part of the Government-backed Jamaica Screen Development Initiative, which is being spearheaded by JAMPRO alongside industry stakeholders. Holness praised local filmmakers and production teams for continuing to push boundaries despite challenges within the sector, noting that projects like Love Offside demonstrate the growing potential of Jamaican cinema on the world stage. The film was produced by The Limners and Bards Limited and has already generated strong interest among local entertainment audiences.
Meanwhile, conversations surrounding Jamaica’s film future have intensified online, with many social media users welcoming the possibility of more international productions, stronger investment in local talent and expanded opportunities for Caribbean creatives. Others pointed to the global success of Jamaican music and culture as proof that the island already has a powerful foundation to build a thriving film industry capable of reaching audiences far beyond the Caribbean.
As Jamaica continues pushing to diversify its economy through entertainment and culture, the success of films like Love Offside could become a defining test of whether the island is truly ready to evolve from a music powerhouse into a major player in the global film business.
