Rygin King’s ICE Detention Halts Green Card Interview Amid Ongoing Firearm Case in New York

Dancehall star Rygin King has been thrust into fresh legal uncertainty after reports emerged that he was detained by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement just hours before a crucial green card interview, a dramatic twist that now clouds his immigration status and raises concerns about his health while in custody.

According to sources close to the “Tuff” deejay, born Matthew Smith, ICE officers reportedly picked him up at his residence shortly before his scheduled appointment with the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. His detention has since been listed on ICE’s official database, but authorities have not publicly disclosed the reason. Neither the artiste nor his representatives have issued a statement, fuelling speculation across the dancehall community. The development follows a recent trend of heightened scrutiny, with fellow deejay Chronic Law also detained in similar circumstances.

The situation is further complicated by Rygin King’s ongoing legal troubles in New York, where a firearm case remains active despite claims from a former attorney that the matter should have already been resolved. The deejay has pleaded not guilty to multiple charges stemming from a 2024 traffic stop in Queens, where a loaded firearm was reportedly found. Court proceedings have dragged on through adjournments and suppression hearings, with his next appearance set for March 27. Sources have suggested another individual accepted responsibility for the weapon, but the case has yet to be formally dismissed.

Beyond the legal questions, concerns are mounting over the artiste’s wellbeing. Rygin King has been paraplegic since surviving a 2020 shooting in Westmoreland, making his need for specialised medical care a critical issue while in detention. Despite these challenges, he has maintained a strong musical presence, releasing the introspective projects Therapy and Recovery, which documented his journey through trauma and rehabilitation.

With his immigration future now uncertain and his court date looming, the unfolding situation places one of dancehall’s most resilient figures at a pivotal crossroads. Fans across Jamaica and the diaspora are watching closely as more details surrounding his ICE detention are expected to emerge.
