Cordel “Skatta” Burrell has opened up about the circumstances surrounding his controversial reaction to Chronic Law and Popcaan at Vybz Kartel’s Freedom Street concert in Kingston, revealing that his mother was hospitalised at the time while he was also dealing with the humiliation of feeling that his ego had been bruised in front of tens of thousands of people. Speaking with Anthony Miller on Entertainment Report, the veteran producer and entertainment executive took accountability for his actions, admitting that he was not proud of how he reacted.

Asked whether his reaction represented a lapse in the professionalism and humility he had spoken about earlier in the interview, Skatta acknowledged that he did something he may not have done under normal circumstances. “I can take accountability that I did something that maybe under normal circumstances I wouldn’t,” he said. “However, it is the past. I will live and learn. I will move on from it.”

Explaining what pushed him to respond, Skatta revealed that his mother was in hospital at the time and admitted that his ego was also a factor. “My ego was bruised in front of 30,000, 40,000 people. So I felt the need to react, which I did,” he said, before adding, “Not proud of it.” Despite the controversy, Skatta said he has refused to allow the incident to define him and is focused on moving forward.

He also made it clear that there is no lingering hostility towards the artistes involved. Skatta described Popcaan as “an artist for real” and said he and Chronic Law are good, noting that they have since been in the same room together. For Skatta, the incident is now a lesson in accountability, maturity and knowing when to leave the past behind.

With his focus now firmly on work and legacy, Skatta appears determined to ensure that one emotional reaction does not overshadow the career and growth he continues to build.
