1Clauze Explains Why Dancehall Is Struggling to Break Into the Global Mainstream: ‘Music Is a Product, Music Is a Business’

Social commentator Reuben “1Clauze” Hussey believes contemporary dancehall must rethink its approach to international success, arguing that the genre’s increasingly insular sound, gritty lyrical themes and resistance to established industry structures are limiting its global crossover potential. Speaking with Anthony Miller on Entertainment Report, Hussey called for a renewed focus on melody and commercial appeal while urging artistes to preserve the sound that made them distinctive, embrace professional management and build partnerships capable of taking their music beyond Jamaica and its diaspora.

Hussey pointed to the enduring influence of Bob Marley, describing his contribution to Jamaican music and culture as unmatched. He argued that Marley helped put reggae, Jamaican patois and the island’s cultural identity on the world map, adding that contemporary artistes should understand the scale of his achievements. Turning to modern dancehall, Hussey said the genre has become increasingly focused on local and diaspora audiences, with lyrical themes that may be difficult for international listeners to understand or relate to.

The commentator also questioned whether the current sound of dancehall is connecting with overseas audiences, particularly when artistes rely heavily on trap-influenced production and gritty lyrical content. He argued that melody, rhythm and the overall feeling of a song can transcend language barriers, pointing to Sean Paul’s international success with songs such as “Temperature”. According to Hussey, artistes such as Sean Paul, Beenie Man and Shabba Ranks focused on creating songs that people could enjoy and dance to, rather than relying solely on a particular street image.

Hussey further argued that international crossover requires more than social media popularity, stressing the importance of professional management, traditional media exposure and established industry partnerships. “Music is a product, music is a business,” he declared, warning that artistes cannot rely solely on their existing fan bases if they hope to reach wider audiences and secure bookings on major international stages. He also highlighted the challenge of expanding into new markets without abandoning the sound that initially attracted listeners.

Despite his concerns, Hussey believes dancehall can regain global momentum. He identified Shenseea and Koffee as artistes with the potential to achieve wider international success, while pointing to Masicka’s collaboration with Damian Marley as an example of music capable of reaching beyond an established fan base. Ultimately, he called for a renewed emphasis on melody, commercial appeal and strategic industry collaboration, arguing that dancehall has the talent to break through again while preserving its Jamaican identity.
