One conversation with his mother may have changed the course of dancehall history. Speaking with Reggaeville after performing at the Summerjam in Germany, Dexta Daps revealed that he was preparing to quit music and get a regular job when he sought advice from his deeply Christian mother, who had never been a fan of dancehall. Instead of discouraging him, she offered her support, a moment he says gave him the belief that no one could stop him from succeeding.
Reflecting on one of the lowest points of his career, Dexta admitted that pursuing music “wasn’t always sweet and smooth” and that he had reached a crossroads where he questioned whether continuing in dancehall was the right decision. Despite knowing his mother did not particularly support the genre because of her faith, he decided to tell her he intended to continue. To his surprise, she responded: “I don’t like what you’re saying to me, but I know that you know what you’re doing. So, I’m going to support you.”
For the “Owner” hitmaker, those words proved to be life-changing. “That was enough for me,” he explained. “Nobody after that could tell me that I couldn’t make it.” He added that his mother’s encouragement gave him the confidence to persevere during one of the toughest periods of his life, revealing that he “was about to quit” because the journey had become so difficult. Looking back, Dexta described that chapter as a defining moment that fuelled his determination to keep pushing forward.
Today, Dexta Daps has grown into one of dancehall’s biggest international stars, headlining concerts and performing on major festival stages around the world, including his recent appearance at Summerjam. His story serves as a reminder that behind many successful careers is a single conversation, a timely word of encouragement, or someone willing to believe when everything else feels uncertain.
