In a bold move signalling deeper Caribbean collaboration within the creative economy, the Government of Antigua and Barbuda has officially appointed dancehall heavyweight Masicka as Cultural Ambassador for Youth Development. The announcement, made during Thursday’s post-Cabinet briefing, positions the Jamaican star at the forefront of a regional push to empower young creatives while strengthening cross-border ties in music and culture.
Director of Communications Maurice Merchant confirmed that the appointment stems from a proposal by Foreign Affairs Minister E.P. Chet Greene, aimed at expanding the twin-island nation’s creative industries and deepening youth engagement. The initiative is designed to provide structured opportunities for emerging talent, while also leveraging Masicka’s global influence to enhance cultural diplomacy and industry collaboration across the Caribbean.
Central to the programme is a Jamaica-based exchange that will see three young Antiguan and Barbudan artists receive hands-on training in songwriting, vocal development, studio recording and performance. Participants will also gain critical exposure to producers, record labels and the business mechanics of the music industry, including touring and entrepreneurship. Meanwhile, Masicka is set to lead a series of mentorship initiatives and youth empowerment forums, creating spaces for dialogue, inspiration and practical guidance.
Born Javaun Fearon in Portmore, Masicka has carved out a reputation as one of dancehall’s most lyrically sharp and commercially viable acts, with projects like 438 and Generation of Kings earning international recognition, including placements on the Billboard Reggae Albums chart. His appointment marks a significant cultural bridge between Jamaica and Antigua and Barbuda, with officials indicating that the next phase will focus on artist selection and programme rollout. As the region continues to invest in its creative economy, Masicka’s new role could prove pivotal in shaping the next generation of Caribbean talent.
