Renowned gospel singer, ordained minister, and cultural ambassador Dr Carlene Davis is set to add yet another prestigious title to her name, as the University of Technology (UTech), Jamaica, prepares to confer upon her an Honorary Doctor of Letters (Honoris Causa). The award, to be presented on Sunday, February 1, recognises her phenomenal contributions to music, ministry and humanitarian outreach, cementing her legacy as one of Jamaica’s most respected female voices across both gospel and reggae spaces.

Already holding a Ph.D. in pastoral counselling, Davis’s second doctorate underscores a career defined by purpose, faith and global impact. The ceremony, originally scheduled for November but postponed due to Hurricane Melissa, arrives fittingly during her birth month and ahead of a packed international schedule. Born in Colonels Ridge, Clarendon, Davis began shaping her musical path in her teens after relocating to England, later rising to prominence in the early 1980s with hits such as It Must Be Love and Dial My Number. During her secular phase, she released 15 albums, toured extensively across Europe, Asia and the Americas, and became one of reggae’s most recognisable female ambassadors, signing with major international labels including VP Records and Polygram.

A life-changing breast cancer diagnosis three decades ago marked a turning point, leading Davis to fully rededicate her life to Christ and seamlessly merge gospel with reggae and dancehall influences. That transition not only expanded her audience but positioned her as one of the most consistent and influential female gospel artistes in the Caribbean. Her impact was reaffirmed in 2025 when she was named Best Gospel Artiste – Female by The Gleaner, while 2026 has already opened with a slate of high-profile performances and honours.

Beyond the UTech ceremony, Davis will headline the One Mega Weekend Gospel Festival in Guyana, receive an Icon Award in Florida, and be honoured alongside her husband Tommy Cowan with the Marcus Garvey Award during Reggae Month. Additional appearances include festivals in Dominica, a Valentine’s Day concert in St Ann, and the Love & Harmony Cruise led by Beres Hammond. With new music, visual projects and humanitarian work on the horizon, Dr Carlene Davis continues to prove that her journey of faith, music and service is far from finished.
