Dutch authorities are pushing for a longer prison sentence for Jamaican reggae sensation Jah Cure, as his legal battle in the Netherlands intensifies. The Public Prosecutor’s Office is now seeking a 9.5-year sentence for the singer, born Siccature Alcock, over a 2021 stabbing incident involving Dutch concert promoter Nicardo “Papa” Blake.
The incident reportedly unfolded in Amsterdam following a dispute over unpaid performance fees. While the court acknowledged that Jah Cure stabbed Blake, judges initially ruled the act was not premeditated, resulting in his acquittal on attempted murder but a six-year sentence for attempted manslaughter in March 2022.
Both sides are appealing. Prosecutors are challenging the acquittal on the more serious charge, while Jah Cure’s defense team is appealing the manslaughter conviction. “In November, the Supreme Court will issue the ruling,” a spokesperson for the Netherlands Prosecution Service stated.
Jah Cure, known for hits like Unconditional Love and Longing For, remains in pre-trial detention as the legal battle continues. Fans across the Caribbean and global reggae community are anxiously waiting for the final decision, expected later this year.
