Despite being on his Worl’ Boss Tour across Europe, Dancehall superstar Vybz Kartel carved out time to send an uplifting message to students in Jamaica, reminding them that education is a tool no one can take away. The deejay, known affectionately as Di Teacha, urged schoolchildren to treat the new term with seriousness and commitment, stressing the importance of doubling and even tripling their efforts in the classroom. Quoting George Washington’s famous words, Kartel underscored that education is “the key that unlocks the golden door to freedom,” encouraging youths to focus especially on the subjects that challenge them most.

In a heartfelt appeal, the “Fever” hitmaker urged students to approach their studies with “respect, discipline, and humility,” emphasising that knowledge is something no one can strip away. “Deal with your education with respect. Approach it with respect, approach it with discipline, approach it with humility. Treat your teachers with respect and humility and learn something and retain it,” Kartel said, reinforcing his own reputation as both an artist and mentor figure.

Kartel also took a moment to shine a light on Jamaica’s teachers, acknowledging the tireless effort they put into shaping the nation’s future. “To the teachers them, nuff love and nuff respect to your hard work and dedication, because me have a sister who is a teacher so me understand,” he shared. His words carried extra weight given the daily challenges educators face, particularly in under-resourced schools across the island.

The deejay’s comments come at a pivotal moment in the national conversation on education, arriving just days after Jamaica’s Education Minister Dr. Dana Morris Dixon defended schools as “spaces of re-socialisation” while responding to backlash over a controversial hairstyle ban on “baby hair edges.” While the minister stressed the importance of discipline, she also made clear that no child should be denied access to the classroom because of grooming rules. Kartel’s message, in many ways, complements that vision—calling for discipline but balancing it with respect for students and appreciation for teachers.

Currently performing in Malta with sold-out shows before returning to the UK leg of his tour, Kartel’s decision to pause and address school youths highlights his enduring influence beyond music. In a season where debates on cultural expression, discipline, and education are dominating headlines, Di Teacha’s voice has added both encouragement and perspective, reminding young Jamaicans that respect for knowledge remains one of life’s greatest investments.
