Jamaica rolled out a warm homecoming on Monday (Sept. 22) as Minister of Culture, Gender, Entertainment and Sport, Hon. Olivia Grange, welcomed athletes returning from the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo. But the loudest applause was reserved for sprint queen Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce, whose extraordinary legacy continues to elevate Jamaica on the global stage.

Minister Grange, greeting the team at Norman Manley International Airport, described Fraser-Pryce as unparalleled in the history of sprinting. “As far as we are all concerned, Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce is not only the best woman sprinter Jamaica has produced, but is the best the world has seen,” she declared. That statement underscored Fraser-Pryce’s unmatched record as the most decorated 100-metre sprinter of all time, with more individual global titles than any other woman in the discipline.

The Minister highlighted milestones that defined Fraser-Pryce’s career—from her historic Olympic gold medal in Beijing 2008, to defending her crown at the London 2012 Games, and capturing five World Championship titles across nearly two decades of dominance. Her 2022 victory at age 35, Grange noted, solidified her as the oldest sprinter to win a world title, a testament to her enduring brilliance and consistency.

Beyond the track, Grange applauded Fraser-Pryce’s community impact through her Pocket Rocket Foundation, which has been providing scholarships and mentorship to student athletes since 2013. She also recognized her service as a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador, championing children’s rights. “Through community initiatives and developmental programmes, the Foundation has made its impact…What is so beautiful is that you achieve so much and you’re still humble,” the Minister said, praising the athlete’s grace off the track.

As Fraser-Pryce steps away from Olympic and World Championship competition, Grange emphasized that her influence will endure, inspiring future generations of athletes while bringing immense pride to Jamaica. “The Honourable Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce, OJ, CD, OD, has been nothing short of a phenomenal athlete, a wonderful mother, and a great daughter of Jamaica,” Grange declared, sending the national icon into retirement with love and gratitude.
