St. Thomas is preparing to etch a new chapter of pride into its landscape, as the St. Thomas Municipal Corporation has moved a resolution to rename St. George’s Street in Morant Bay after one of its most celebrated daughters, Toni-Ann Singh. The decision, made during the Corporation’s monthly meeting on September 11, seeks to formally honour the former Miss World for her historic achievements and global representation of Jamaica.

Mayor of Morant Bay, Councillor Louis Chin, who tabled the motion, described Singh as an exemplary figure who continues to embody the parish’s talent and spirit. “Ms. Singh is a proud daughter of the parish of St. Thomas,” echoed Acting Chief Executive Officer Kemeala Esson, as members rallied behind the resolution. The proposed renaming acknowledges Singh’s journey from Bath, St. Thomas, to the world stage, where in 2019 she became the fourth Jamaican woman to capture the Miss World crown.

Her reign was nothing short of historic—Toni-Ann Singh not only brought international recognition to Jamaica but also became the longest-serving Miss World in the history of the pageant. The move to rename one of Morant Bay’s well-known streets, home to landmarks such as the Jamaica National (JN) Bank, symbolises how deeply her accomplishments have resonated with the local community.

The resolution now advances to the Ministry of Local Government and Community Development for gazetting, a step that would officially cement Singh’s name in the parish’s physical and cultural fabric. For the people of St. Thomas, Toni-Ann Singh Street would serve as both a daily reminder of excellence achieved and an inspiration for future generations.
