After delivering a stellar showcase to the packed house at New York’s UBS Arena, dancehall star Aidonia has hinted at a forthcoming album he aptly describes as a “solid Grammy-type album” aimed at transcending his career to the next level. The explosive concert, held on Saturday, May 3, celebrated the 4th Genna head honcho’s 20-year journey in music and featured a powerhouse cast including Shenseea, Jada Kingdom, Mavado, Govana, Cham and Sizzla Kalonji. Still visibly moved by the sea of fans who filled every inch of the arena, Aidonia admitted, “It brought tears to mi eyes fi see how di people dem turn out strong. It was a major win for brand Aidonia.” The remarks were made amid a conversation with the Jamaica STAR.
While fans now eagerly await his official album, Aidonia offered a deeply personal musical interlude in December 2023. Kickstarting the month, he unveiled Occupied Mind, a 23-track compilation not meant to be mistaken for an album. “This is not an album; the official album will be forthcoming soon,” he then clarified in a statement to the media. “You know what we were going through, so we just occupied our minds with music.” The project, recorded during the heartbreaking period following the passing of his 9-year-old son, Khalif Lawrence, who succumbed to a protracted battle with cancer, reflects both emotional resilience and artistic therapy. With only one collaboration—featuring Govana—the compilation was executively produced by Banger House Music Group and included work from producers like Emudio, Cashflow Rinse and Mill Beatz.
A dominant force in dancehall since the early 2000s, Aidonia—born Sheldon Lawrence—rose to prominence with early hits like Lolly and Chicken Head, and later solidified his place with tracks like Yeah Yeah and Fi Di Jockey. Dancehall, a genre known for its fierce competition and rapid turnover, has seen many come and go, but Aidonia’s lyrical mastery and hitmaking abilities have earned him lasting respect and fan loyalty.
As he prepares for the Jamaican leg of his anniversary concert this Saturday, May 10, at Sabina Park, featuring heavyweights like Bounty Killer, Capleton, and Ding Dong alongside several newcomers, Aidonia is focused on evolution.
