The calls for Popcaan to receive his U.S. visa have intensified, especially with the recent wave of visa reinstatements for reggae and dancehall icons. As major stars like Buju Banton, Beenie Man, Sizzla Kalonji, Vybz Kartel, and Bounty Killer return to the U.S. stage, Popcaan’s absence is becoming more conspicuous. The artist, who has never performed in the U.S., continues to be a global force in music, yet his inability to access one of the genre’s largest markets is a persistent challenge. His 2023 tweet asking, “Why they let me into everywhere except America?” resonated deeply with his fans, many of whom have taken to social media to demand his inclusion in the ongoing wave of visa approvals.

Popcaan’s influence on the global stage is undeniable. With collaborations alongside international stars like Drake, Jamie xx, and Gorillaz, the artist has built a massive fanbase. Despite this, his inability to perform in the U.S. limits his reach, especially considering that reggae and dancehall music accounted for nearly $300 million in U.S. sales in 2023, according to the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA). In 2023, Popcaan launched the “1st Time in America campaign,” urging his over 732,000+ followers on X (formerly Twitter) to help push for his travel freedom, signalling his commitment to overcoming the roadblocks.

The recent wave of visa reinstatements for dancehall and reggae artists has further fueled the advocacy for Popcaan. The return of Buju Banton in 2024 saw a 60% increase in his digital streams, highlighting the economic and cultural importance of these artists to the U.S. market. Beenie Man, Sizzla Kalonji, Vybz Kartel and most recently, Bounty Killer, are also poised to capitalize on their new opportunities in the U.S., and fans are eager for Popcaan to join them. One fan commented, “Dancehall nice AGAIN ?????? but we need Poppy now fi seal up di ting.”

Social media platforms have become a key space for public support, with fans using every opportunity to voice their desire to see Popcaan perform in the U.S. “Alright, Poppy next and summer is in full effect ??,” said another supporter, while others focused on specific events like Best of the Best, where Popcaan’s inclusion would elevate the festival to new heights. As the demand for Popcaan’s U.S. performances grows, so does the sense of anticipation within the global dancehall community.

While challenges remain, Popcaan’s path to U.S. soil seems increasingly likely, given the growing momentum behind his case. Legal and diplomatic hurdles could still delay his travel plans, but with fans rallying behind him, there’s a renewed sense of optimism. As one Instagram user put it, “Popcaan will get soon in the mighty name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, amen.” It’s clear that the wait for Popcaan to perform in the U.S. is far from over, but the collective hope that this moment will soon become a reality continues to grow.
