In a stunning escalation of immigration enforcement, arrests by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) have surged by 627% in a single month, according to U.S. Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem. The crackdown, which has resulted in more than 20,000 undocumented immigrants being detained, is a stark contrast to the 33,000 at-large arrests recorded throughout the entire previous year under President Joe Biden. This wave of enforcement has sent shockwaves through Caribbean communities across the United States, with many fearing they could be next.

“President Trump and this Administration are saving lives every day because of the actions we are taking to secure the border and deport illegal alien criminals,” Noem declared in a statement on February 26. However, immigration advocates argue that the aggressive approach is ensnaring not only those with criminal records but also individuals with minor offences or expired visas. Florida, a key hub for Caribbean migrants, has intensified its crackdown with the implementation of the 287(g) program, allowing local law enforcement to assist ICE in identifying and detaining undocumented individuals.

Jamaica’s Ambassador to the United States, Audrey Marks, has weighed in on the issue, revealing that approximately 60% of Jamaicans who enter the U.S. legally but overstay are particularly difficult for ICE to track. While she clarified that deportations to Jamaica have not spiked under Trump’s policies, she noted a rising trend of Jamaicans choosing to leave voluntarily to avoid deportation. “There is no big influx of deportees to Jamaica,” Marks reassured, while urging a more humane approach for those working out of status.

With heightened immigration raids and state-level crackdowns, Caribbean nationals—particularly from Jamaica, Haiti, Trinidad and Tobago, and the Dominican Republic—now face an uncertain future in the U.S. Community leaders continue to push for reforms that balance national security with the dignity and well-being of immigrants who have long contributed to American society.
