The Jamaican icon, widely regarded as one of the most influential figures in dancehall history, is set to receive the prestigious MOBO Impact Award at the ceremony on February 18 at Newcastle’s Utilita Arena. This marks the first time in over a decade that Kartel has stepped foot on UK soil, making his presence a major highlight of the event. MOBO Founder Kanya King CBE emphasized the significance of his recognition, stating, “Vybz Kartel’s impact on music is immeasurable. His influence extends beyond the world of dancehall, in which he is a musical giant.”
Kartel isn’t the only Jamaican talent being celebrated at this year’s MOBOs. The Best Caribbean Music Act category, which continues to spotlight the region’s diverse and evolving sound, features an elite lineup of nominees, including Popcaan, Skillibeng, Shenseea, YG Marley, and last year’s winner Valiant. Since its introduction in 2022, the category has recognized both dancehall and reggae heavyweights, with Skillibeng securing a groundbreaking victory in its inaugural year. Sean Paul remains the most decorated winner in MOBO history, boasting six wins from eleven nominations, while Shenseea’s 2021 triumph made her the first female artist to take home the title.
Adding to the excitement, the Queen of Dancehall, Spice, will grace the MOBOs stage as one of the night’s headline performers.
