Despite weeks of anticipation and mounting industry buzz, dancehall icon Vybz Kartel’s long-awaited Grammy victory remains elusive. At Sunday’s 67th Annual Grammy Awards, the Best Reggae Album honour went to Bob Marley: One Love (Music Inspired by the Film), a star-studded soundtrack accompanying the blockbuster biopic. While Kartel’s Party With Me had fueled conversations about dancehall’s growing Grammy influence, nostalgia and legacy ultimately won the day, marking yet another victory for the Marley dynasty.
The One Love soundtrack, released by Island Records, features a dynamic roster of artists, including Skip Marley, Wizkid, Shenseea, Kacey Musgraves, and Jesse Reyez, delivering fresh interpretations of Bob Marley’s timeless classics. With the film grossing nearly U$200 million globally and dominating streaming platforms, the album benefited from unprecedented exposure. “It’s the type of project Grammy voters gravitate toward—culturally significant, commercially successful, and packed with industry heavyweights,” said one entertainment analyst.
For Kartel, the loss is bittersweet. His nomination alone was historic, marking the first time a dancehall album recorded during incarceration broke into Grammy territory. Party With Me resonated with a younger, global audience, climbing to No. 2 on the iTunes Top 100 Reggae Albums chart and amplifying his post-prison resurgence. “If I wasn’t incarcerated, I would have been nominated already… I would have definitely won,” Kartel told Billboard in a recent interview. His nomination signals a shift in Grammy recognition, acknowledging dancehall’s influence beyond traditional reggae sounds.
While Kartel’s Grammy dream remains unfulfilled, his return to U.S. soil—after nearly two decades of visa restrictions—suggests a new era for his career. With plans to headline international festivals like Wireless and SummerJam, the deejay’s impact continues to grow. And if this year’s nomination is any indication, dancehall may soon find itself permanently embedded in Grammy history.
