Jamaican dancehall icon Vybz Kartel has found himself at the center of political controversy in St. Vincent and the Grenadines (SVG) after his recent revelation on the Drink Champs Podcast. The entertainer, whose real name is Adidja Palmer, stated that Prime Minister Ralph Gonsalves had “sent for” him on a private jet for a visit in August 2024. This statement triggered backlash from the opposition New Democratic Party (NDP), which is now demanding transparency from the government regarding Kartel’s trip.
Kartel, currently in London for a historic moment at the 2025 MOBO Awards, quickly clarified his comments in a video posted on a Facebook page under Gonsalves’ name. “Yes, I was invited to the island by the boss himself, but I paid for my own jet, because I am rich,” Kartel explained, apologizing for any misinterpretation of his remarks. The SVG government had previously stated that no public funds were used to facilitate the artist’s visit, which was primarily for treatment of Graves’ disease by Cuban specialists.

Beyond medical treatment, Kartel’s trip to St. Vincent had sparked speculation about business ventures. Social media footage from August 2024 showed him in discussions with key figures, including former cricketer Marlon Samuels and his attorney Isat Buchanan, while also surveying property with a realtor. “Marlon was the one who suggested I invest in real estate here,” Kartel reportedly said, indicating a broader interest in the island beyond healthcare.
Fresh off his U.S. exploits, Kartel’s presence in London marks a pivotal moment in his career. He is set to receive the prestigious MOBO Impact Award at the ceremony on February 18 at Newcastle’s Utilita Arena. This marks his first time in the UK in over a decade, making his attendance a major highlight of the event.
