Jamaican dancehall has lost another iconic voice. Donald Cox, widely known as Danny English, passed away on January 23, 2025, at the Kingston Public Hospital (KPH) after a prolonged battle with diabetes. He was 54 years old. Renowned for his unique voice and contributions to the genre’s golden era, English’s passing marks the end of a chapter in dancehall history, but his legacy lives on.

Danny English rose to prominence in the early 2000s with his infectious hit “Party Time,” a collaboration with Egg Nog on the legendary Diwali Riddim. Produced by Steven “Lenky” Marsden, the riddim is celebrated as a dancehall masterpiece, spawning global hits like Sean Paul’s “Get Busy” and Wayne Wonder’s “No Letting Go.” Reflecting on his contribution, fans often describe English’s voice as “distinctive and timeless,” cementing his status among dancehall’s elite. Beyond “Party Time,” tracks like “Let’s Go Party” and “It Ago Bun Dem” further solidified his place in the genre’s history.

In recent years, English showcased his resilience both in music and life. His 2021 EP, featuring tracks like “Cut Dem Off” alongside his sons Static and Bum Bam, was a testament to his enduring creativity. His son Jayblem, who found success in 2021 with the hit single “Account,” continues the family’s musical legacy. Despite his struggles with diabetes—a condition affecting 1 in 8 Jamaicans—Danny English remained a source of inspiration, quietly battling the illness while advocating through his actions for greater awareness of the disease.

The Caribbean, which has some of the world’s highest diabetes rates, underscores the significance of English’s story. His life serves as a reminder of the need for increased health education and intervention across the region. As fans and fellow artists mourn his loss, Danny English’s voice, music, and indomitable spirit will continue to resonate, ensuring his place in the annals of dancehall history.

He is survived by 23 children, 15 boys and eight girls, who now carry forward his legacy in their own unique ways.
