Several Jamaican acts and the critically acclaimed biopic Bob Marley: One Love are in the spotlight after earning nominations at the 2025 NAACP Image Awards. The film, which chronicles the life and legacy of reggae legend Bob Marley, secured six nods, including Outstanding Motion Picture and Outstanding Ensemble Cast in a Motion Picture. Directed by Reinaldo Marcus Green, the movie has grossed over US$180 million globally, with US$96.9 million from North America alone, making it the 23rd highest-grossing film of 2024 in the region.
British actor Kingsley Ben-Adir, who portrayed the adult Bob Marley, is in the running for Outstanding Actor in a Motion Picture, while Lashana Lynch, who played Marley’s wife, Rita, earned a nomination for Outstanding Actress in a Motion Picture. The film’s soundtrack, a vibrant collection of Bob Marley’s iconic music, also received a nod for Outstanding Soundtrack/Compilation Album. Reflecting on the film’s success, Green said in a recent interview, “This project was a labour of love and a tribute to the enduring power of Bob Marley’s music and message.”
Jamaican talent continues to shine in the music categories as well. Dancehall star Skillibeng’s international collaboration Jump with South African singer Tyla and American rapper Gunna is nominated for Outstanding International Song. Skip Marley, Bob Marley’s grandson, also earned a nomination in the same category for Close, a track that samples Maxi Priest’s 1990 Billboard hit Close to You. The song, currently at No. 23 on Billboard’s Rhythmic Top 40 Airplay chart, marks Skip’s second NAACP Image Awards nod, following his 2021 nomination for Outstanding New Artist.
Actress and singer Sheryl Lee Ralph also earned recognition, receiving a nomination for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series for her role in the hit ABC show Abbott Elementary. Ralph’s nomination highlights her continued excellence and influence in the entertainment industry.
The nominations underscore the global influence of Jamaican music and culture. As the NAACP Image Awards continue to honour excellence in entertainment and the arts, these nods celebrate not just individual achievements but also the enduring legacy of reggae and dancehall on the world stage. The ceremony will take place over two days, February 21 and 22, airing on BET and CBS. With these nominations, Jamaica’s rich cultural tapestry is once again poised to captivate audiences worldwide.
