Reggae songstress Etana has voiced her frustration over the sudden cancellation of her much-anticipated performance in Nairobi, Kenya, scheduled for last Saturday, December 7. The show, which was to be a celebration of reggae music and her latest works, was called off due to its clash with Tanzanian star Diamond Platnumz’s concert, also planned for the same day and location. Taking to social media, the Wrong Address singer hinted at foul play, declaring, “Someone has paid big money to ensure the show tonight is sabotaged!”
Etana, whose music has long been a beacon of empowerment and positivity, shared her disappointment with fans in a series of tweets. She criticized what she perceived as behind-the-scenes politics, writing, “All this politics and drama for one girl. I wonder who is behind it all. Why you so afraid of one show and one woman?” Despite the setback, she remained resolute, clarifying that she would not be attending the rival event, saying, “Let me be clear, I am not showing up at Platinumz’s show!”
The cancellation comes at a time when Etana is actively promoting her latest album, Nectar of the Gods, released in July 2024. The album, under her Freemind Music label, has been lauded for its soulful, poignant tracks, including the lead single Don’t Give Up, an anthem dedicated to young women overcoming adversity. Collaborations with reggae luminaries such as Big Youth, Shatta Wale, and Bugle further solidify her place as a formidable force in the genre. In recent years her decision to go independent has proven fruitful, with her projects receiving critical acclaim and earning her two Grammy nominations for Best Reggae Album.
Etana’s recent ventures also include Etana Live in Nairobi, a live album recorded during the Pamoja Festival in June 2024. Featuring 23 tracks spanning two hours, the album showcases her dynamic stage presence and deep connection with her audience. Reflecting on her journey since her 2008 debut The Strong One, Etana continues to use her music as a platform for social justice and personal empowerment. Despite the challenges in Nairobi, her fans worldwide remain steadfast, celebrating her resilience and artistry.
