In a recent interview with Real Talk Jamaica, dancehall songstress Stacious shared the bittersweet story behind her 2010 hit “Come Into My Room,” featuring Mavado, which was poised to catapult her to international fame before an unexpected roadblock involving Australian pop star Kylie Minogue. Describing it as both her best and worst song, Stacious revealed how her collaboration with Mavado, who was at the height of his career, went from a potential Billboard hit to a painful reminder of the complexities of the music industry.
Stacious recounted that one late night, around 2 a.m., she received a call from Mavado, who was at Stephen’ Di Genius’ McGregor’s recording studio with an irresistible chorus that he insisted she record immediately. “I was asleep, but when Mavado called, I didn’t hesitate,“ Stacious recalled. Upon arriving at the studio, everything was set up; she only needed to add her vocals and adlibs. The song, she felt, was a surefire hit—its infectious sound immediately resonated as familiar, yet fresh. As it started gaining traction on mainstream outlets like New York’s Hot 97 and was on the brink of breaking into the Billboard Charts, Stacious was blindsided by an unexpected call. “We received a call that the song had to be pulled because the owner had claimed it,“ she said, visibly stunned as she recalled the moment.
Confused and eager for answers, Stacious turned to Mavado, who was equally perplexed by the turn of events. Their investigation revealed that the song’s chorus sampled Kylie Minogue’s 2001 track “Come Into My World“ from her album Fever. Neither Stacious nor Mavado was familiar with Minogue, and they even resorted to googling her name to understand who had derailed their chart-bound success. “Kylie was unknown to both of us,“ she said, emphasizing the irony of the situation. Despite their ignorance of the song’s origins, Minogue’s claim on the rights ultimately stunted the single’s upward trajectory, stripping it of the international spotlight it was poised to seize.
Reflecting on the experience, Stacious candidly expressed her mixed emotions about the track which has amassed over 32 million collective views on YouTube that could have been her breakthrough. “That’s why I consider ‘Come Into My Room‘ my best and worst song,“ she concluded, a sentiment that speaks to the highs and lows that come with navigating the music industry’s legal minefields. For Stacious, the saga of her almost-international hit remains a poignant reminder of how swiftly success can be derailed, especially when the music world’s intricate web of copyrights and ownership gets in the way.
