In the vibrant hub of Kingston lies the beating heart of Jamaica’s creative sector. The Minister of Culture, Gender, Entertainment and Sport, Hon. Olivia Grange, passionately advocates for the recognition of the creative industry as a catalyst for economic growth and employment opportunities. With a compelling vision and unwavering determination, Minister Grange emphasizes that the nation’s creative sector is poised to not only complement but surpass traditional economic pillars.
Addressing a captivated audience at the third edition of the Jamaica Creative Career Expo, Minister Grange declared, “The creative economy is alive and kicking, beckoning us to rise above our weight class and make a resounding impact.” Organized by the Ministry’s Jamaica Creative Unit, the expo attracted over 1,000 enthusiastic high school and tertiary students, alongside seasoned practitioners and aspiring entrepreneurs eager to explore the vast potential of the creative realm.
Central to Minister Grange’s message was the undeniable economic prowess of the creative sector. In 2022, the industry contributed a formidable $2.2 billion to Jamaica’s revenue stream, comprising 5.2% of the island’s GDP while providing direct and indirect employment opportunities to 3% of the populace. Reflecting on the sector’s resilience during challenging times, particularly amidst the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, Minister Grange highlighted its pivotal role in stimulating economic activity. Temporary reopening of the entertainment sector in 2020 saw a remarkable $17 billion surge in the nation’s economy, underscoring the sector’s indispensable contribution to Jamaica’s fiscal landscape.
Embracing the expo’s ethos of empowerment and enlightenment, Minister Grange urged students to seize the plethora of opportunities within the creative sphere. “Today marks a pivotal moment for you to chart your course in the creative economy, to not only envision but actively pursue your aspirations,” she passionately exclaimed. With a diverse array of creative entities showcased at the event, students were encouraged to explore their passions and forge their path towards a prosperous future.
In closing, Minister Grange emphasized the imperative of boldness, urging students to transcend conventional boundaries and embrace the boundless possibilities within the creative industry.
