Dancehall artiste Laden, in a recent interview, provided an insightful journey through his life in the music industry, from his early inspiration to his experiences in the penal system and his aspirations as a free man. Laden attributed his decision to become a professional artiste to Aidonia, emphasizing the importance of taking one’s craft seriously. He also expressed gratitude to fellow entertainers Bramma, Versi, and T’Nez for their support during his incarceration.
Laden’s words carried a poignant message for the youth, urging them to avoid the pitfalls of the penal system, which he described as designed to break individuals lacking mental strength. He shared anecdotes of his interactions with Vybz Kartel and Tommy Lee Sparta during his imprisonment.
Addressing the incident that led to his detention, Laden, speaking with the Let’s Be Honest podcast, openly admitted his guilt in relation to an illegal firearm charge. He also reflected on the tragic death of fellow artiste Delus (brother of Konshens), someone he had seen momentarily before the unfortunate event occurred.
In the realm of dancehall, Laden acknowledged his respect for fellow artists while singling out Vybz Kartel among his favourites and paying homage to Mavado. He also extended well wishes for a speedy recovery to Big Ship chief Freddie McGregor. The ‘Time to Shine‘ hitmaker also made a bold assertion about a multi-talented producer, highlighting Stephen McGregor’s unmatched talent, “nobaddy nuh bad like Stephen”.
However, when asked about future projects, Laden hinted he has been working feverishly in the studio, mentioning his substantial catalogue of new recordings, indicating his readiness to compile a new album or EP if necessary. His optimism was evident in his latest single, ‘Greatness,’ which he believes has the potential to be a breakout hit before unpacking an album. He also hinted at a possible impasse with VP Records regarding an album deal but conveyed that he would not elaborate on the matter.
Laden closed the interview by praising the new generation of dancehall talents, lauding Skeng, Malie Donn, Najeeriii, Jahshii, Jeff FullyAuto, and Kraff, among the notables, while addressing the issue of disrespect among some younger artists towards their seniors. He also shared plans to perform at Popcaan’s upcoming Unruly Fest later in the year.
