The City of Miramar is gearing up for a stellar event as they prepare to unveil a statue honouring the fastest man in the world, Usain Bolt.
Standing at an impressive 6’5″, Bolt, hailing from Trelawny, Jamaica, captured the world’s attention with his remarkable sprinting abilities, holding world records in the 100 meters, 200 meters, and 4 × 100 meters relay. This monumental tribute marks the city’s first endeavour to support the initiatives of Art in Public Places and Art in the Parks.
The unveiling ceremony will occur on Saturday, July 15, 2023, at the Ansin Sports Complex on Miramar Boulevard, from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. The media will have the opportunity to engage in a question-and-answer session with Bolt, providing insights into his extraordinary career. Prior to the unveiling, a Fundraising Banquet & Silent Auction will be held on Friday, July 14, 2023, at the Miramar Cultural Center, benefiting the Usain Bolt Foundation and Do the Right Thing, Inc.
Vice Mayor Alexandra P. Davis expressed her pride in spearheading the erection of the statue, stating, “The world has not known a faster athlete, and it’s our honour to have the first monument for our Art in Public Places initiative installed at the Ansin Sports Complex.” The statue, created by renowned artist and sculptor Basil Barrington Watson, will serve as a constant reminder to aspiring athletes that “Anything is Possible, No Limits,” as quoted by Usain Bolt himself.
This masterpiece by Watson will be the second sculpture dedicated to Usain Bolt, following the “To the World” sculpture commissioned by Jamaica in 2017. Watson, known for his exceptional work, previously crafted the “Hope Moving Forward” sculpture, a tribute to Martin Luther King Jr., in Atlanta in 2021 and the National Windrush Monument in London in 2022.
Attendees of the unveiling are invited to register for the event, where they can witness the remarkable Usain Bolt statue and enjoy commentary from 4-time Olympic medalist Ato Bolton.
