Eliah Seton has been appointed as the new Chief Executive Officer of SoundCloud, effective immediately, succeeding Michael Weissman, who served as CEO since 2021.
SoundCloud has also announced the appointment of Fred Wilson, founder of Union Square Ventures and a member of SoundCloud’s board since 2011, as the new Chairman. Seton joined SoundCloud in 2021 as President, overseeing several operating divisions, including the Creator and Roster operations, as well as strategic planning, business development, and artist partnerships.
As President, Seton has been focused on deepening the relationship between artists and fans by introducing new economic models, products, and tools, which SoundCloud believes has helped refocus the business. According to the company, Seton has played an instrumental role in overseeing the launch of Fan-Powered Royalties (FPR). This model distributes revenue directly to artists based on fan engagement, as well as the acquisition of AI machine-learning music tech firm Musiio.
Fred Wilson expressed his confidence in the appointment of Eliah Seton, saying that his passion for the music business, relationships, and vision are what the company needs to take SoundCloud to the next level. Wilson also thanked outgoing CEO Michael Weissman for his leadership and dedication to the company over the past few years.
For his part, Seton expressed his gratitude to Mike and Fred and his excitement to work with the company’s leadership team to achieve their vision of forging the future of the music industry by unlocking the full power of fandom. Seton believes that SoundCloud has a singular opportunity to revolutionise the industry as the only platform with direct relationships with artists and fans at scale.
SoundCloud has been a significant player in the music streaming industry since its inception in 2007. The company’s focus on creating innovative solutions to connect artists and fans has played a substantial role in its continued success. With the appointment of Eliah Seton as CEO, the company is well-positioned to continue driving innovation in the music industry.
