Dancehall heavyweights Busy Signal and Wayne Wonder have been named the 2026 recipients of Jamaica’s prestigious Reggae Icon Award, recognising their decades-long contribution to taking reggae and dancehall to audiences around the world. Culture Minister Olivia Grange confirmed the announcement ahead of Thursday’s sold-out Independence Day Grand Gala, where the celebrated artistes will be honoured during festivities marking the 10th anniversary of Kingston’s designation as a UNESCO Creative City of Music.

Speaking at Sunday’s Jamaica Gospel Star finals, Grange described the upcoming Grand Gala as “a really exciting Gala” before revealing that both Busy Signal and Wayne Wonder would receive the coveted honour, which celebrates artistes who have helped shape the global reach of Jamaica’s music. The award places the two entertainers alongside an elite list of previous recipients, including Capleton and Leroy Sibbles in 2025, Third World in 2024, Morgan Heritage, Rita Marley and Sizzla Kalonji.

Wayne Wonder has enjoyed one of reggae’s most successful international careers, breaking into the global mainstream after signing with Atlantic Records. His 2003 smash hit No Letting Go reached No. 11 on the US charts and No. 3 in the United Kingdom, while the accompanying album No Holding Back helped cement his reputation as one of Jamaica’s most influential crossover acts. Busy Signal has likewise built an enduring legacy with an extensive catalogue of hits including Jamaica Love, Smoke Some High Grade, Happy Birthday, Tic Toc, Nah Go A Jail Again and Unknown Number. His acclaimed albums Step Out and Loaded further established him as one of dancehall’s defining voices.

This year’s Independence Grand Gala promises to be one of Jamaica’s biggest cultural celebrations. In addition to recognising the Reggae Icon Award recipients, the event will commemorate Kingston’s decade as a UNESCO Creative City of Music, feature a spectacular 1,000-drone display, fireworks, military and police showcases, and celebrate 50 years of women serving in the Jamaica Defence Force. With all seats already sold out, organisers have also arranged a public watch party at Independence Village, allowing thousands more to witness one of the country’s premier Independence celebrations. As Jamaica prepares to honour two artistes whose music has resonated across generations and continents, Busy Signal and Wayne Wonder’s latest recognition further reinforces their lasting place in the nation’s musical history.
