From Benin to the global stage, Angélique Kidjo is about to make history in Hollywood. The five-time Grammy Award winner will receive her star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame on August 18, becoming the first African musician and first Black African performer to earn the prestigious honour. The milestone adds another major chapter to a remarkable career spanning more than four decades, with Kidjo’s artistry helping bridge West African musical traditions with funk, jazz, R&B and other global sounds. The Hollywood Walk of Fame lists her among its 2026 Recording honourees.
Born in Benin and based for decades in Paris and the United States, Kidjo has developed into one of Africa’s most influential musical ambassadors. Her career has earned her five Grammy Awards and numerous other international accolades, while her collaborations have connected her with major artistes including Sting, Alicia Keys, Burna Boy, Pharrell Williams and Quavo. The Recording Academy’s records also show her continued relevance on the global music stage, including a 2026 Grammy nomination for “JERUSALEMA”.
The Hollywood honour arrives at a significant moment for African music, which continues to expand its influence across international markets.
