A generational clash is set to define dancehall’s biggest conversation in 2026, as the International Reggae and World Music Awards (IRAWMA) brings together icons and modern power players in a high-stakes battle for Best Male DJ/Rapper. With legends Vybz Kartel, Buju Banton, and Beenie Man going head-to-head with the new-era dominance of Alkaline and Masicka, the category raises a bigger question: who will take home the coveted silverware? More than just an award, the showdown captures a defining moment where legacy meets impact, and where the genre’s past and present collide for cultural supremacy.

Set for May 17 at the Lauderhill Performing Arts Center in South Florida, the 43rd staging of IRAWMA arrives under the theme “Jamaica Rise,” spotlighting resilience across the Caribbean music industry. The Best Male DJ/Rapper category stands out as one of the night’s most competitive, blending decades of influence with current chart momentum. Kartel enters with renewed global traction following his recent international award success, while Alkaline’s expanding U.S. footprint—highlighted by his upcoming Miami arena play—signals growing commercial power. Masicka, meanwhile, continues to strengthen his profile beyond music through regional cultural leadership, adding a different dimension to the race.

However, writing off the veterans would be premature. Buju Banton’s enduring legacy and Beenie Man’s unmatched catalogue continue to command respect across generations, ensuring that this is far from a straightforward contest. The mix of fan-driven voting and industry input also adds unpredictability, as online mobilisation and cultural loyalty could prove decisive in determining the winner.

As anticipation builds across the Caribbean, the U.S., and the U.K., all eyes now turn to South Florida, where one of dancehall’s most defining categories will unfold. Whether it’s legacy, dominance, or momentum that prevails, this year’s IRAWMA showdown is poised to deliver a moment that could reshape the conversation around who truly leads dancehall today.
