With every hotel, villa, and Airbnb fully booked, the British Virgin Islands (BVI) is poised for a major economic boost ahead of Vybz Kartel’s highly anticipated concert on Saturday, March 15. But as business owners celebrate the surge in tourism dollars, the event has ignited a fierce moral debate, with the BVI Christian Council (BVICC) condemning the government’s financial support of the show. This stark divide raises a crucial question: Should economic gains outweigh cultural and moral concerns?
According to promoter Steve Parillon of YOLO Promotions, ticket sales on the global platform EventBrite indicate a diverse international audience, reinforcing the concert’s impact on tourism. “As we speak, all of the hotels, Airbnbs, and villas are booked out here,” he told BVI News, adding that accommodations in nearby islands are now being considered to meet the demand. The influx of visitors is expected to benefit taxi operators, restaurants, and local businesses, making the event one of the most financially lucrative in recent memory.
However, not everyone is celebrating. The BVICC has strongly criticized the government’s $220,000 sponsorship of the event, arguing that it contradicts the territory’s Christian values. “We informed the Premier in no uncertain terms of our disappointment,” the council stated, emphasizing concerns about the concert’s messaging and its potential influence on BVI’s cultural and moral trajectory. Two legislators have also voiced opposition, questioning whether taxpayer funds should be directed toward entertainment rather than pressing social issues.
Despite the controversy, Parillon remains steadfast in his defence, urging critics to acknowledge the concert’s economic benefits. “Why just point out the negative? Why not look on the positive side as well?” he argued. Premier Dr. Natalio Wheatley has also defended the investment, asserting that the concert will bring widespread economic advantages. With international artists like Skillibeng and Jah Vinci also set to perform, and Vybz Kartel making his first stage appearance in over 13 years, the event is shaping up to be a historic moment for both dancehall fans and the BVI economy.
While the debate rages on, one thing is certain—the Vybz Kartel concert is already leaving a significant mark on the British Virgin Islands, whether measured in dollars or divided opinions.
