Reggae icon Buju Banton, currently on his ‘The Overcomer‘ U.S. tour, has once again demonstrated his deep commitment to his Maroon heritage and community. During a performance at the Capital One Arena in Washington D.C., Banton presented a generous donation of over 30 million Jamaican dollars (USD 200,000) to the Maroon community of Accompong in Cockpit Country. The funds are aimed at infrastructure development and boosting economic mobility, a gesture warmly embraced by the Maroon Chief, Richard Currie.
Chief Currie took to Instagram to express his gratitude for Banton’s significant contribution, calling it an “indomitable legacy as a freedom fighter using word, sound, and power.” He wrote, “On behalf of the Maroons of the Sovereign State of Accompong, I take this opportunity to express our sincere gratitude to @bujubanton for donating USD $200,000 towards infrastructure development and the economic mobility of our Nation.” Although Currie could not attend the event due to unforeseen circumstances, he noted the historic significance of the donation and praised Banton for leading the way in supporting indigenous rights and cultural preservation.
Buju Banton, a proud descendant of the Maroon people, has been actively involved in supporting the Accompong community over the years. In 2021, he donated a tractor, heavy equipment, and two horses, which were instrumental in constructing the first Maroon government building, “The House of Accompong.” These contributions also helped open roads to farming lands, enhancing food security and alleviating congestion. Currie described these actions as breaking a long-standing “curse” of unfulfilled promises made to the Maroon people by others.
The Grammy-winning artist’s recent donation further solidifies his role as a cultural ambassador and advocate for Indigenous rights. “Buju Banton has now shown the world the power of his Maroon bloodline,” Currie stated, emphasizing the transformative impact of his contributions. Banton’s efforts have not only provided essential resources but have also inspired hope for future generations of the Maroon community, demonstrating the power of unity, perseverance, and a commitment to one’s roots.
