At the 2023 iHeartRadio Music Awards held on Monday at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles, Nigerian singers Wizkid and Tems were named joint winners of the newly created Afrobeats Artist of the Year category.
The duo won the award ahead of their compatriots Burna Boy, CKay, and Fireboy. Additionally, Tems won another award for her collaboration with Future and Drake, titled ‘Wait for U’, in the Hip-Hop Song of the Year category.
Although Wizkid and Tems’ win was notable, the night’s biggest winner was Taylor Swift, who walked away with six awards, including Song of the Year for ‘Anti-Hero’. Harry Styles, the British singer, won the coveted Artist of the Year award, while GloRilla tied with Latto for the Best New Hip-Hop Artist category.
Unfortunately, Nigerian star Rema was unsuccessful in the Best Music Video category, where he was nominated for ‘Calm Down’, featuring Selena Gomez. Instead, the category was won by Korean group BTS. The event was successful, and many talented musicians were recognized for their efforts.
