Nigerian singer Burna Boy has emphasized the need for unity among Africans worldwide, calling on black Americans to understand their African heritage and not work against the progress of the African people.
In a recent video interview, Burna Boy spoke about the importance of visiting Africa to understand one’s identity and roots, noting that Chinese-Americans and Italian-Americans have a strong connection to their respective countries of origin that African Americans may lack.
He also called on black Americans to “not work against the progress of our people.”
“It’s sad to see that in 2023 there are still such black people who would prefer we stay divided and conquered,” he wrote.
Burna Boy’s comments attracted controversy on social media, with some accusing him of downplaying the struggles faced by black Americans. However, in a subsequent Instagram post, Burna Boy clarified his remarks, stating that he supports the efforts of black Americans to secure reparations and land rights in the US but also wants them to recognize that Africa is also a part of their heritage.
He stressed that black people worldwide need to unite as brothers and sisters to make progress and that division and conquest only hinder this progress. Burna Boy’s message of unity and understanding is especially relevant in today’s world, where racism and discrimination continue to be major issues faced by people of African descent.
